Gatsby

As we talked about in class, The Great Gatsby is one of those must read books that every high schooler has to read. However when I was reading it, I noticed that It was quite different from any of the books that I had read before. From the beginning of the book, there was no character in Gatsby that I could really relate to, really like. From the tile and nick's description in the beginning, I had thought that maybe I would like Gatsby. However when we met him in chapter 3, even he didn't seem very likable. So why does we read a book with no character to like. Well because you don't have to like all the characters in order to like a book. The Great Gatsby is a great book because we can learn a lot from it. We learn about 1920s American Culture and the The American Dream. The Gatsby makes a clear stance on the American Dream, and in fact, Song of Solomon made a similar statement as well. Both book showed how the American Dream was simply an unachievable contract that has no true meaning. We also learn lot of lessons that we can apply to life. We see characteristics in the characters of the book that we don't like and we make sure that we don't include those same characteristics in ourselves.  We learn to not be as materialistic and greedy from Daisy and we learn to not try to change the past but live in the present From Gatsby.
